Read full description of the books The Naked God:

I want to start my review by saying I am a little upset about this book at the moment:

Sorry I got carried away. Anyhow all the signs were there; it is my fault I failed to recognize them. The end of otherwise excellent second book failed to make me as excited as what was going on before despite the cliffhanger. This was the sign of things to come - and boy did they came!

I mentioned that the previous installment managed to avoid dreadful Second Book of a Trilogy syndrome. Here it is back with the vengeance. The whole tale of 1100+ pages can be described as one giant stalemate (or a Mexican standoff):

The humans and their adversaries did not do much through the whole length of the novel: nobody at all wanted to make difficult decisions. This means absolutely minor skirmishes with equally minor victories and losses for both sides. On the whole I would say the humans were slowly losing. And then the end came - out of nowhere and unexpectedly.

It looks as if the author decided he wrote enough of nothing and pulled the Dex Ex Machina at the very last moment to quickly finish the tale.

So nothing remotely exciting happened during first 900 pages

This includes 100% boring long preparations for a military campaign and the campaign itself. I am willing to nominate it for the most boring one ever written in any genre. How comes of all the numerous (and excellent) characters the book spent the majority of time on the most boring ones? There was a whole planet I could not care less about; do I need to say it kept appearing promptly and steadily?

After reading the middle book I was sure I would stalk all my GR friends until they give up and read the trilogy. Now that I finished it my friends can rest at ease: my stalking is cancelled.

I still reserve the right to to my thing in case Peter F. Hamilton ever decides to release a special edition with 900 pages of the last book cut off, but even 899 pages would not do.

This does not mean I am not going to read anything by Peter F. Hamilton. This happened to be his first published work with first book being quite good (if slow in the beginning spent on world-building) and excellent second one. He dropped the ball here, but I am eager to continue reading other works by the author. He is considered to be the greatest living space opera writer and I completely agree.

As to the rating let me just say that I am a little upset:

For this reason I round its true rating of 2.5 stars down. If you make it this far, man up/woman up/gender fluid up - gotta go with times - and survive this one. It is not completely hopeless.
