Read full description of the books The Hug Book:
I think this book deserves the Caldecott winner for 2015; illustrated by Anne Kennedy, who does a fantastic job on portraying the images with watercolors, pencil and crayons, she is proficient with all the tools. The images are vivid and inviting, and do not cause discomfort like some children’s books which can have rather grotesque physics or misshaped humans, with abstract poses or body features. This book actually features no humans but rather personified animals which I found to be O.K-although of course some children may be lost by this concept, their parents can explain that we aren’t the only ones in this world and other parents care for their young ones, too. The animals look friendly and inviting, full of spirit and optimism, with smiles on their faces, although some are sad too, where the “child” dog is crying and the “momma” dog is sad as well. “Army bunny dad” was a great addition as well by the artist I think, great way to show support of our armed forces in Children’s books; very well illustrated too. The words rhyme as well so they form a good catchy tune easy to remember and tell to young children. This book is good for ages 1-5 I think. The text then again leaves to be desired since it’s about hugs…really? So if the child wants to know the word “hug”, due to how much it is repeated they will definitely know it by the end of the day. The author could not find a better topic than hugs for young children? But I guess children feel love through physical touch of their parents when they get hugged since they don’t have the concept of love in their mind so I guess it works.
