I think I would've enjoyed this when I was 12? But now? It didn't do anything for me AT ALL. I wanted to read it because a) I love Inkheart and b) I love dragons. WHAT COULD GO WRONG?! (Everything, apparently.)
Here's what didn't work for me:
+ There are many talking animals...and I'm just not such a big fan of talking animals! SORRY. (But, like I said, this is adult-reader-me speaking, whereas when I was a kid I probably wouldn't have minded.) I had trouble enough with Gregor the Overlander and the talking rats, and that's by my favourite author ever. So my realism-brain didn't appreciate that.
+ It's kind of cliche, in the sense that they go on a long adventure, meet ALL the fantastical creatures ever (dragons, brownies, elves, dwarves, etc.) and adopt an orphan boy and that good is SUPER GOOD and there is nothing except good in the good people. *quietly tears hair out* I don't even think Ben ever even made a mistake. (Even as a kid, I always hated the goody-goodies because they were too hard to relate to.)
+ The focus really isn't on the dragon after the first 100-pages. THIS MAKES ME SAD. I wanted dragons. The focus is on orphan-Ben-riding-a-dragon-and-crossing-the-world.
+ It's omnipresent narrative, which isn't my favourite.
+ There are so many characters and no one is deeply developed because they just keep meeting people, getting help, moving on. I didn't feel any depth to the story.
SO YEAH. This didn't work out for me, but I am an adult reader. I've got a horde of MG books I adore to pieces and reread continually, but this will not be joining that pile. I would've liked more dragon and less sour-snarky-brownie. I would've liked some personality in Ben. I would've liked the dragon to eat the moon, or something, for a little excitement. But no.
