Read full description of the books The African Queen:
First published in 1935, The African Queen by Mr Forester is a no less remarkable achievement than his more recent novels. At the time of its publication in a B.B.C. programme said:
'What a very good story-teller Mr C. S. Forester is! Whether he's writing about guns, or ships, or bank-clerks who commit murder. This time, he has given us a story about a launch - the African Queen - ancient, and with a leaky boiler, and a crew of two people who undertake - and more or less accomplish - the impossible. And every page is interesting, and quite extraordinarily vivid. I know scarcely any other novelist who can create an atmosphere as Mr Forester can - one strained and sweltered and agonized with Rose and Allnut as they struggled with the terrific obstacles that Nature, as well as the African Queen, put in their way.'
The illustration on the cover has been specially drawn for this edition by Robin Jacques.
