About the Author
Herman Raucher began his professional life as a messenger at 20th Century-Fox Films in New York City. The next fifteen years saw him leading somewhat of a double life. As an advertising man he served as V.P., Creative Director and Board Member for several major advertising agencies, including working as Copy Director for Walt Disney Films and a two-year stint in the U.S. Army. And as a playwright he authored live dramas for such prestigious television shows as The Alcoa Hour, Goodyear Playhouse and Studio One.
From there Raucher moved on into the world of novels and screenplays. His many novels include Summer of '42, Ode to Billy Joe, Watermelon Man, Maynard's House, There Should Have Been Castles, and A Glimpse of Tiger. As a screenwriter, Raucher has won numerous awards: his screenplay Summer of '42 earned him both the Oscar and Writers Guild nominations for Best Original Screenplay and won the Photoplay Gold Medal for Best Film of the Year. Hieronymus Merkin received the British Writers Guild's award for Best Original Screenplay.
Herman Raucher's upcoming projects include a musical production of Summer of '42,, scheduled for 2002; Kitty Hawk: The Musical, scheduled for 2003; and the film Maynard's House, scheduled for 2002 production.

Herman Raucher began his writing career during The Golden Age of Live Television, penning original one hour dramas for such esteemed shows as Studio One, Goodyear Playhouse and The Alcoa Hour. At about the same time, he was serving as Advertising Copy Director for Walt Disney whose new company, Buena Vista, was venturing from animated films into live action productions. It was also the time of the debut of Disneyland and all the excitement that came with it.
Back in New York he served as Creative Director and Board Member of several major ad agencies. To further fill out his life he turned his pen to writing four plays, six novels and seven films, among them being “Summer of '42” which was both a best-selling novel and a box office success. It earned him an Academy Award Nomination for Best Original Screenplay as well as a similar nomination from The Writers Guild of America. Raucher’s cult film, “Hieronymus Merkin,”won the Best Original Screenplay award from The Writers Guild of Great Britain. His racially charged movie, “Watermelon Man,”shook up the film critics no small end.
He still feels most at home with novels, in that no one can change as much as a comma without his approval—a condition that every writer savors but very few achieve.
