Read full description of the books Biscuit Wants to Play:
Biscuit Wants to Play is a book about a curious young puppy with a big heart. He discovers some kittens and only wants to play with them. At first, they are not in a hurry to play with Biscuit, but once the kittens get into trouble Biscuit comes to their rescue. The illustrations really help the reader connect with the innocence of Biscuit just wanting to play with the kittens.
This book puts into perspective that even though cats and dogs are not supposed to like each other they can get along. To put this into a more realistic point of view, even know you may not think you are going to like someone you still need to get to know them before you make that judgment. This is a very good message to relay to children because they need to know to not judge a book by its cover. Get to know someone before you make that assumption.
This would be a great book for beginning readers to read in a literature circle or even in partners. After having the kids read the book have them talk amongst each other about what the book was about, and what their favorite part was. If you do a literature circle idea with this book it will get the kids thinking a little more in depth about the book.
Biscuit Wants to Play has a lexile rating of 20L this would be a good read aloud for kindergarten or first grade, and students should be able to independently read this book by beginning of first grade.
Read information about the authorAlyssa Satin Capucilli was born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1957. She graduated from Sarah Lawrence College, and pursued her interest in dance, becoming a professional dancer and dance instructor. Though Capucilli had written stories, poems, and even puppet shows as a child, she didn't consider a career as a writer until after her own two children were born. To this day she sees herself as both a dancer and a writer, and the two professions complement each other nicely: dancing is, in her words, “telling stories in another way,” and readers of her children's books can attest to the rhythm of her language. Since 1994, she has written more than 15 books for children, and her work has been translated into French, Hebrew, Afrikaans, Greek, and Bulgarian.
Capucilli lives in Hastings-on-Hudson, New York, with her husband and children. They have a chocolate Labrador retriever named Huckleberry, who likes to watch the author at work.
