Read full description of the books Once Upon a Lyme...: A Tale of Two Journeys:
Once Upon a Lyme... A Tale of Two Journeys tells the story of a mysterious illness that stumped a parade of doctors, and the new-found discipline of writing that became the unexpected by-product of years of misdiagnoses. After seeing over two dozen physicians, writing five novels and self-publishing one, Once Upon a Lyme was a personal story that the author felt had to be shared. The book chronicles Hamilton’s search for an answer to a far-flung roster of symptoms and the creative outlet she turned to in case she became bedridden.
It took nine years from the onset of the symptoms to learn the name of her nemesis. Because the diagnosis was so long in coming, by that time she had late-stage Lyme, which is next to impossible to cure. Her only hope at that point was going the "alternative" route, which required leaving normal and taking a huge leap of faith, resorting to methods that are part new-age, part medieval. She would soon learn getting the correct diagnosis was only half the battle.
Throughout her struggles, three things saved her from complete despair: an overabundance of willpower, an appreciation of the absurd, and writing. Her experiences during that time make for a candid, comic and sometimes harrowing look at what she endured at the hands of medical professionals. What she got for her trouble was a craft that has allowed her to channel her overactive imagination into writing books, which is now her sole occupation—besides fighting Lyme.
Though there are moments of despair, Once Upon a Lyme is ultimately about triumph of the spirit over disease, the courage to keep fighting, and the sense of humor necessary to prevail against adversity.
Read information about the authorI have been writing since 2000, when a collection of bizarre physical problems forced me to find a creative outlet I could pursue from bed, if it came to that. Since then, I've written several novels and two memoirs. I love creating characters and setting them down in situations to see how they react. Most of my stories spring entirely from my overly-fertile imagination. My latest—Finding Ruth—was inspired by a photo found among my mother’s possessions during her move into a nursing home, and is a combination of memoir, detective work and imagination.
I didn't start reading for pleasure until I was 19. Once I discovered the joy of stepping inside someone else's imagination, I was forever hooked. Because of the magic I experienced when I read, I believed writing was something I couldn't do if my life depended on it. It was only when I forgot that I couldn't write that I discovered the creative joy of writing. I still read a lot - I always have 2-3 books going at once - and I'm still getting a thrill out of testing my characters' strenght. Both pastimes help me understand the complexities of life and my fellow human beings.
It's my policy to only review books that I've really enjoyed, for a few reasons. If I'm not really taken with what I'm reading, I may not finish it. This falls under the "Life is too short" philosophy. Because I have multiple books going at any time, some just drop off my radar. I would also feel uncomfortable giving a fellow author a bad rating; just because I didn't find it particularly enjoyable/interesting doesn't mean there's something inherently wrong with it. But you can be assured that I give a 4 or 5 star ratings because the book was worthy of it in my eyes.
On a professional note, I'm currently working on the 3rd installment of the Madeline Dawkins series, cooking up more trouble for the MDPI team. I hope to have it completed by the end of 2017. Please check back for updates on my progress!
