Read full description of the books The Disappearance of Nagato Yuki-chan, Vol. 1:
The Disappearance of Nagato Yuki-Chan is a comic spin-off from the main Haruhi Suzumiya series. It seems to suggest that when, in the fourth volume of that series, The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya, the alternate timeline was created, that it continue even after the "main" universe was restored.
To that end, the main characters are Yuki, Ryoko and Kyon, though really Yuki and Ryoko have the main stage. Oh, Kyon still has a big role as Yuki's potential love interest, but Ryoko, as Yuki's best friend and big sister/mother figure, has a bigger role.
It should be noted that, just as when the alternate timeline was first introduced in the fourth Haruhi book, that Yuki and Ryoko are not ordinary human girls. Yuki is shy but not emotionless, and Ryoko has a temper but is sweet and not a psycho. Kyon is not developed much as we don't get much of his perspective, except for one or two spots.
As the story progresses, we learn that the Literature Club, which Yuki is the only current member and president of, is about to be disbanded for not meeting the "at least five members" requirement. In her search for new members, Yuki runs into and recruits Kyon, whom she has been crushing on due to a small act of kindness he did for the shy girl. Ryoko keeps trying to push the two of them together, despite how much the unbearably shy girl is irked by it, though Yuki does appreciate the efforts of her friend.
Haruhi shows up as well for her usual antics, in a hint of what will be more antics. Here she is different due to the changes that spawned this other timeline.
I don't know if the other timeline is official, or if it is just a "what-if" scenario asking what would have happened had Kyon not changed things back to the way they were. I like to think that it really did spawn a separate universe.
I really liked Nagato here. I think she's cool anywhere, but to see her mannerisms and interests ramped up to a higher level, combined with her shy demeanor, was sweet. As for Ryoko, I like her, but keep thinking of her evil and psycho main timeline self.
Kyon is nice, but hasn't gotten much development. I hope eventually they do something with him. As for Haruhi, well, she is still Haruhi, if a nicer version created by the main Nagato.
The art was actually really nice and better than the first few volumes I've read so far of the main timeline Haruhi series. I quite liked it.
Really, really fun series and one I highly Recommend.
